  The paper addresses the issue of explaining and translating the complex notion of pain on the basis of The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis (1940) and its two Polish and two Spanish translations created in the 20th and the 21st centuries. The intertwining of temporal, stylistic, semantic, and cognitive factors plays a crucial role in the comparative analysis of the original text and its four translations. The theoretical, cultural, and methodological underpinnings are presented prior to the analysis proper and focus on the issues of the (in-)expressibility of pain in/via language, pain and culture, pain and translation, and onomasiological ‘labels’ of pain. All these considerations are related to the ensuing empirical study. The analysis at hand is divided into two parts – a shorter quantitative one (in which I deal with the distribution of lexical ‘pain labels’ in five texts under scrutiny) and a more extensive qualitative one (in which I elaborate on various aspects of translating the ‘pain language’ across the three languages involved). The emergent conclusions seem to confirm the thesis posed at the beginning of the paper that temporal, lexico-semantic, stylistic, and even idiosyncratic and cultural, factors converge at the interface of the original text and its translations, something that results in highlighting numerous shades and nuances stemming from them.;
  W niniejszym artykule podjęta została analiza komparatystyczna anglojęzycznego dzieła C. S. Lewisa The Problem of Pain i jego czterech przekładów – dwóch na język polski i dwóch na język hiszpański. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, że ból jest zjawiskiem bardzo trudnym do jednoznacznego uchwycenia poprzez język, co może stwarzać dodatkowe trudności gdy „tłumaczy się” go między różnymi językami, ale też odmiennymi kulturami. W kwestii metodologii odnoszę się do Rosch (1978), Tabakowskiej (2015), Vinaya i Darbelneta (1958/1995), Waszakowej (2009) i incydentalnie do Hejwowskiego (2006). Ogólny wniosek, który wyłania się z poniższych rozważań, jest taki, że tłumaczenie/ wyjaśnianie bólu na styku oryginał – przekład charakteryzuje się wysokim stopniem zniuansowania leksykalno-semantycznego i stylistycznego, co potwierdza wieloaspektowość i złożoność tego zjawiska.
