  Our article is devoted to the female body and the uterus in particular, represented in an ambiguous way in the French medical discourse between 1599 and 1626. This discourse emanates from the doctor, the surgeon and the midwife at the same time. First, we analysed the passages dealing with the uterus transmitted by academic medicine. This literature has allowed us to measure the weight of the medical tradition in questions relating to procreation, where the uterus appears as the most mysterious organ of the female body. We then looked at the work of Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), a physician and surgeon who not only presented the means of relieving women during childbirth, but also instructed midwives on how to deal with various complications. Finally, we have studied some of the Observations of the midwife Louise Bourgeois (1563-1636) who could claim a real familiarity with the female body and with the problems arising during and after childbirth. After comparing these different discourses, we can conclude that the figures of the doctor, the surgeon and the midwife were all strongly influenced by the knowledge inherited from Antiquity. However, views vary within this medical hierarchy, as do the terms, recommendations and topics discussed. Each of the representatives, according to their rank and the contact they actually had with the female body, elaborated a discourse whose stakes undoubtedly went beyond the fate of the parturients.;
  Notre article est consacré au corps féminin et à l’utérus en particulier, représenté d’une manière ambiguë dans le discours médical français des années 1599-1626. Ce discours émane à la fois du médecin, du chirurgien et de la sage-femme. D’abord, nous avons analysé les passages traitant de l’utérus transmis par la médecine universitaire. Cette littérature nous a permis de mesurer le poids de la tradition médicale dans les questions relatives à la procréation, où l’utérus apparaît comme l’organe le plus mystérieux du corps féminin. Ensuite, nous nous sommes intéressés à l’oeuvre d’Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), médecin et chirurgien qui présente non seulement les moyens de soulager les femmes durant les couches, mais qui, de plus, instruit les sage-femmes sur la manière de faire face aux diverses complications. Enfin, nous avons étudié certaines des Observations de la sage-femme Louise Bourgeois (1563-1636) qui pouvait se prévaloir d’une réelle familiarité avec le corps féminin et avec les problèmes survenant pendant et à la suite des couches. Après avoir confronté ces différents discours, nous pouvons conclure que les figures du médecin, du chirurgien et de la sage-femme étaient toutes trois fortement influencées par les connaissances héritées de l’Antiquité. Cependant, les points de vue varient au sein de cette hiérarchie médicale, de même que les termes, les recommandations et les sujets abordés. Chacun des représentants, selon son rang et selon le contact qu’il avait réellement avec le corps féminin, élabore un discours dont les enjeux dépassent sans doute le sort des parturientes.
