  The article discusses major problems central for modern translation studies. The au-thor defines vital areas and investigation methods applied within translation research. These considerations offer also a good opportunity to consider duties of the translator. The main problem in the translation process is the translator, because the translation process takes place in his brain. Perfect command of the mother tongue and broad ex-tralinguistic knowledge are prerequisites for the translator. The translator and translation scholar should co-operate in the elaboration of lexicons.;
  W artykule przedstawiony jest problem translatologii jako nauki zajmującej się tłumaczeniem. Autor omawia obiekt i metodologię badań translatologicznych, przechodząc do warunków umożliwiających prawidłowe tłumaczenie, zastanawiając się przy tym nad obowiązkami tłumacza. W dalszym ciągu rozważań autor szeroko omawia tendencje zauważalne we współczesnych badaniach translatologicznych, krytykując niektóre z nich. Poruszony zostaje także związek translatologii z leksykografią pod kątem wymogów stawianych słownikom przez użytkowników-tłumaczy.
