  The article develops the idea proposed by Elżbieta Tabakowska to apply cognitive linguistics to translation. A cognitive theory of equivalence in imagery is situated in the contexts of different subdisciplines of Translation Studies according to the classical division proposed by James S. Holmes, that is into the general theory and descriptive studies distinguished within the theoretical branch and the three applied subdiscplines, namely, translator training, translation aids and translation criticism. The discussion focuses on the advantages of a cognitive theory for particular fields of research. Then, possible difficulties and challenges in the development of the approach are presented as well as some ways to overcome the obstacles. Furtherome, the article outlines the new direction of development of a cognitive translation theory as a discipline cooperating with neighbouring areas of research for the sake of bilateral benefit. Thus, it touches upon rarely discussed realms of study, namely research which treats Translation Studies as a potentially insightful source of data and conclusions for the disciplines they draw from, such as literary studies, linguistics, cultural studies etc. Some specific areas and topics within this interdisciplinary research oriented towards contribution to the neighbouring disciplines are enumerated and succinctly presented.;
  Artykuł rozwija zaproponowane przez prof. Elżbietę Tabakowską zastosowanie językoznawstwa kognitywnego w przekładzie. Kognitywna teoria ekwiwalencji na poziomie obrazowania usytuowana jest w kontekście różnych subdyscyplin przekładoznawstwa. W artykule omówiono korzyści dla teorii przekładu, badań opisowych oraz dziedziny stosowanej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dydaktyki przekładu, oraz możliwe trudności w rozwijaniu podejścia kognitywnego. Ponadto artykuł zarysowuje możliwe kierunki rozwoju tej teorii przekładu jako dyscypliny współpracującej z dyscyplinami sąsiadującymi na zasadzie obustronnej korzyści. Podkreślany jest rzadko omawiany kierunek badań traktujących studia nad przekładem jako źródło cennych wniosków dla dyscyplin, z których czerpie.
