  This article addresses the issue of students’ motivation to learn languages other than English. The results of a survey conducted among students at the University of Warsaw attending a French language course show that the experience of learning a second foreign language in earlier stages of education is often negative. Students pointed to the ineffectiveness of classes in secondary schools, which they explained by an insufficient number of hours, the low level of teaching and preparation for the matura exam in other subjects being given priority. For the respondents perceptions of French are mostly positive; it is perceived as a language of elegance, prestige and high culture. As they prepare for their careers, students recognise its potential in the labour market. Participants in the study also indicated that knowledge of French could enhance their professional attractiveness. However, they noted that lessons during their university studies focus mainly on the general language (which is due to their low level of proficiency), which prepares them for specialised communication only to a limited extent.
