  The Synod of Pistoia was the central point of the Tuscan reforms that aimed to regulate the relations between the State and the Church under the reign of Peter Leopold, the great duke of Tuscany 1765-1790. The wide reform programme supported by the bishops of Prato and Pistoia, and headed by Bishop Scipione de Ricci, encountered huge opposition of those who wanted to protect the old Roman Catholic Church order. The reformers went further and demanded fundamental changes in the theological doctrine, the liturgy and the organisation of church structures (the 57 point programme). Their claims incorporated some demands made by the Jansenists clergy. Some of those demands (missa dialogata, the use of the vernacular in the liturgy, or removal of Baroque influences from the Church) were far ahead their times, and some were recognised only later, and implemented by the Second Vatican Council. Although the Synod of Pistoia approved the reformers' postulates, they failed to be implemented throughout the whole of Tuscany and the new Synod-accepted legislation came to a spectacular end.;
  Le concile de Pistoia constitua un point culminant des réformes des rapports entre l' État et l'Église qui furent réalisés au temps du règne de Pierre Léopold, grand duc de la Toscane du 1765 au 1790. Entreprise par le grand duc et le groupe des réformateurs avec Scipione d Ricci, évêque de Prato et de Pistoia à la tête, la tentative de forcer au synode diocésain un programme bien large de la réforme fut l'apogée du conflit entre les partisants des changements et les défendeurs de l'ancien régime dans l'Église. Les postulats des réformateurs ne se limitaient pas aux questions des rapports entre l'Église et l'État, mais les partisants de la réforme démandaient les changements dans la doctrine théologique, dans la liturgie et dans l'organisation des structures ecclésiastiques (programme de 57 points). Fondés sur la reflections des jansénistes italiens, toutes les démandes dépassaient leur époque et par conséquant leurs réalisation n'a pas été possible qu'au temps du Concile de Vatican II. Bien que le synode de Pistoia aprouva les postulats des réformateurs, la tentative de leur application dans toute la Toscane s'est fini par la chute bien spectaculaire.
