  The paper is an elaborated version of a talk presented at the international conference on „Dal Concordato del 1925 al Concordato del 1993. Convengo in occasione dell’ 80° anniversario del primo Concordato fra la Repubblica di Polonia e la Santa Sede” held at the Papal University Georgiana in Rome on 15 November 2005. It contains a comprehensive analysis of the reasons prompting a state to enter into a concordat agreement, discusses its main provisions and the process of its implementation and execution. In this context, particular attention is has been given to the negotiations carried out by Poland and Vatican, with special emphasis on the role of Prof. Stanisław Grabski, a role that had been till very recently completely unknown. Those finding are a result of the author’s research carried out in British and American archives. Those deliberations are accompanied with an analysis of the reasons why the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic decided to declare the concordat no longer valid in 1948, which brings in some new elements to the discussion among researches that has been going on for more than sixty years.;
  L’article constitue une version élargie de la communication présentée à la conférence scientifique sur le thème „Dal Concordato del 1925 al Concordato del 1993. Convegno in occasione dell’ 80° anniversario del primo Concordato fra la Repubblica di Polonia e la Santa Sede”, qui a eu lieu à l’Université Gregoriana à Rome au 15 novembre 2005. Dans son contenu, il est consacré à l’analyse des causes de la conclusion du Concordat. On accentua surtout le déroulement des négociations polono-vaticaines et le rôle qu’y fut joué par le négociateur polonais – professeur Stanisław Grabski. Ces aspets du problème peut être connus grâce aux recherches poursuivis par l’auteur dans les archives britanniques et américaines.Les considérations essentielles sont complétées par les remarques sur les causes de la résiliation unilatérale du Concordat par le gouvernement de la Pologne Communiste en 1945. Elles apportent quelques éléments nouveaux à la discussion scientifique sur ce fait historique qui se déroule depuis 60 ans.;
  Wśród wielu zadań, jakie spoczęły na władzach państwowych odrodzonej w 1918 roku Rzeczypospolitej, pilnego rozwiązania wymagała kwestia uregulowania statusu prawnego Kościoła katolickiego, zróżnicowanego w poszczególnych dzielnicach w zależności od systemu wyznaniowego byłych państw zaborczych. W kołach rządowych zgodnie podzielano pogląd, że określenie stosunku państwa do tego Kościoła powinno nastąpić w drodze porozumienia ze Stolicą Apostolską. Mówił o tym już pierwszy projekt konstytucji, przyjęty przez Komisję Sejmowo-Konstytucyjną Tymczasowej Rady Stanu w dniu 28 lipca 1917 roku. Za rządów Rady Regencyjnej opracowano pierwszy projekt konkordatu. Po odzyskaniu niepodległości pierwszy z inicjatywą zawarcia takiego układu wystąpił ówczesny wizytator apostolski, od lipca 1919 roku nuncjusz w Warszawie, Achille Ratti, przyszły papież Pius XI. Gotów był podjąć rokowania w tej sprawie już w listopadzie 1918 roku z rządem kierowanym przez socjalistę Jędrzeja Moraczewskiego i przygotował nawet projekt konkordatu3. Napotkał jednak wyraźny opór polskiego episkopatu.
