• Description:
  To commemorate the jubilee of the death and canonization of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Santo Tomás Institute of Balmesiana organized the 10th Symposium of Thomistic Studies, St. Thomas Aquinas, Master of the Sacred Page. The event took place at the Abat Oliba CEU University in Barcelona from May 10th to 12th, 2024. Other institutions, in particular, the Association pour le Centenaire Thomas d’Aquin (ACTA) from Toulouse, contributed greatly to the organization of the symposium. This event aimed to explore St. Thomas’ use of Sacred Scripture in his role as a biblical scholar. This is one of the aspects of the doctrine of Aquinas that has recently gained prominence, as there has been a renewed appreciation for the central role that Sacred Scripture played in the theology of the Angelic Doctor, frequently referred to as “biblical Thomism”. The purpose of the symposium was not only historical but also doctrinal, aiming to shed light on contemporary biblical hermeneutics and exegesis. The symposium was structured around the three core activities of the medieval scholar: legere, disputare, and praedicare, with the intention to understand the place of Sacred Scripture in each of these. It began with several introductory issues that addressed Aquinas' biblical hermeneutics and its foundations, with enriching contributions from professors Martínez, Amado, Loiseau, and Manresa. Next, the symposium delved into Aquinas' biblical exegesis, focusing on his commentaries on St. John, St. Paul, and a book of the Old Testament, with insightful presentations by Professors Giambrone, Roszak, and Ossandón. The following sessions were dedicated to the examination of how St. Thomas utilized disputare in his construction of a theological system. Professors Margelidon, Aroztegi, and Prieto offered valuable reflections on grace, the sacraments, and divine knowledge. Finally, the symposium turned to Aquinas' praedicare and his use of Scripture in preaching, with illuminating presentations by professors Smith, Vijgen, and Perrin. Thomas Olivier Venard concluded the symposium by discussing the contemporary relevance of Aquinas' biblical hermeneutics. We are pleased to offer the reader a substantial number of these enriching contributions in both this and the next issue of Bíblica et Patristica. We are grateful to the Editorial Board for their willingness to publish the texts and, in this way, familiarise the readers with the fruitful discussions we experienced in Barcelona in May.;
  Con motivo del jubileo por la muerte y canonización de santo Tomás de Aquino, el Instituto Santo Tomás de Balmesiana organizó el X Simposio de Estudios Tomísticos con el título Santo Tomás de Aquino, Magister in Sacra Pagina. Se celebró del 10 al 12 de mayo de 2024 en la Universitat Abat Oliba CEU de Barcelona, con la colaboraron de otras instituciones, destacando la Association pour le Centenaire Thomas d’Aquin (ACTA), de Toulouse. Este simposio pretendió abordar el uso que santo Tomás hace de la Sagrada Escritura en su misión como Maestro. Se trata de uno de los aspectos de la doctrina del Aquinate que últimamente ha adquirido más relieve, dado que se ha revalorizado el lugar que ocupaba la Sagrada Escritura en la Teología de nuestro Santo Doctor, a lo que se le suele denominar como “Tomismo bíblico”. La intención del simposio no fue sólo histórica, sino también doctrinal, esto es, la de iluminar la hermenéutica y la exégesis bíblica actuales. El simposio se estructuró conforme a las tres acciones propias del maestro medieval: legere, disputare et praedicare, con la intención de captar en cada una de ellas el lugar que ocupa la Sagrada Escritura. Se empezó con algunas cuestiones introductorias, que abordaron la hermenéutica bíblica del Aquinate y sus presupuestos, con aportaciones muy enriquecedores de los profesores Martínez, Amado, Loiseau y Manresa. Seguidamente, el simposio abordó la exégesis bíblica del Aquinate en algunos puntos de sus comentarios a san Juan, a san Pablo y a algún libro del Antiguo Testamento, con intervenciones muy interesantes de los profesores Giambrone, Roszac y Ossandón. A continuación, las ponencias del simposio se dedicaron a penetrar en el uso que santo Tomás hizo en su disputare, es decir, es la construcción de un sistema teológico. Para ello enriquecieron nuestra reflexión sobre la gracia, los sacramentos y la ciencia divina los profesores Margelidon, Aroztegi y Prieto. Finalmente, nuestra consideración se dirigió al predicare de santo Tomás y a su uso de la Escritura, con unas preciosas ponencias de los profesores Smith, Vijgen y Perrin. Thomas Olivier Venard cerró el simposio con una intervención sobre la actualidad de la hermenéutica bíblica de santo Tomás Es un gozo poder ofrecer al público un buen número de estas enriquecedoras aportaciones tanto en este número como en el siguiente de la revista Bíblica et Patristica, a la que agradecemos su disponibilidad a acogerlas. Así se podrá revivir algo de la fructuosa conversación que tuvo lugar en Barcelona en mayo de 2024.
