  A Polish and a Russian unit of language: the monosemous implicational 'a'

  The subject of the article is the expression a (perceived as identical in Polish and Russian). In the first part of the paper, this expression is subjected to a semantic analysis and a formal argumentation showing that the expression is monosemous, carrying an implicational meaning, in all possible (explicitly indicated) syntactic contexts. Unlike (also implicational) i, the antecedent additionally includes the truth of the tautology α ∨ ~ α (without stating it separately). The subsequent parts of the article present critical comments on descriptions of a to be found in Polish linguistic literature, comparative observations on i and a against the Slavic and general linguistic background, and remarks on the role of the Polish and Russian opposition i vs. a in the theory of linguistic relativism.;
  Przedmiotem artykułu jest wyrażenie a (perceptybilnie tożsame w języku polskim i rosyjskim). W pierwszej części jest ono poddane analizie semantycznej wraz z wywodem formalnym pokazującym, że jest to wyrażenie monosemiczne, we wszystkich możliwych (wskazanych eksplicytnie) kontekstach składniowych niosące sens implikacyjny, przy czym, w przeciwieństwie do (również implikacyjnego) i, poprzednik obejmuje dodatkowo prawdziwość tautologii α ∨ ~ α (bez jej odrębnego stwierdzania). W kolejnych częściach artykułu przedstawione są krytyczne komentarze dotyczące opisu a w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu, obserwacje porównawcze na temat i, a na tle słowiańskim i ogólnojęzykowym oraz uwagi o roli pol. i ros. opozycji i vs a w teorii relatywizmu językowego.
