It demonstrates how Pietrkiewicz uses the historical setting to represent the plight of an immigrant and their double alienation. In the context of the works by Henryk Sienkiewicz and by Witold Gombrowicz, alienation is not so much rooted in history itself as in the most popular Polish narratives on this topic, namely the ones created by Sienkiewicz and Gombrowicz themselves.
