  Im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert bauten die Hildesheimer Bischöfe ihre Residenzstadt zu einer civitas sancta aus. Dabei umgaben sie die Kathedrale mit einem Kranz von Kloster- und Stiftskirchen. Im 13. Jahrhundert kamen zahlreiche weitere Klöster, Stifte und Kirchen für Laien (Pfarrkirchen), die innerhalb des hochmittelalterlichen Kirchenkranzes lagen, hinzu. Ferner umgaben die Domimmunität mehrere Hospitäler. Wenn auch jede für sich bestand, gab es auch liturgische Feiern und wichtige Ereignisse, die die Geistlichen der Stadt gemeinsam begingen. Als Beispiel kann hier die Beerdigungsfeier Bischof Godehards (1038) genannt werden.;
  About St. Mary’s Cathedral – A Circle of Churches in Hildesheim in the Middle Ages In the 11th and 12th centuries bishops of Hildesheim extended their city-residence as civitas sancta. The cathedral was surrounded by a circle of monasteries and collegiates. In the 13th century within this medieval circle of temples there were erected numerous monasteries, collegiate and parish churches. Around the territory of the cathedral immunity there appeared numerous hospitals (shelters). Those independent church communities celebrated together liturgical festivals and important events. A case in point may be the funeral after the death of the bishop Godehard (1038).;
  Wokół Katedry Mariackiej. Wieniec kościołów w Hildesheim w średniowieczu W XI i XII wieku biskupi Hildesheimu rozbudowywali swoje miasto-rezydencję jako civitas sancta. Katedra została wówczas otoczona wieńcem klasztorów i kolegiat. W XIII wieku w obrębie tego pełnośredniowiecznego wieńca świątyń wybudowane zostały kolejne liczne klasztory i kolegiaty, a także kościoły dla świeckich (parafialne). Wokół obszaru immmunitetu katedralnego powstały również liczne szpitale (przytułki). Te dość samodzielne wspólnoty kościelne celebrowały wspólnie święta liturgiczne oraz ważne wydarzenia. Przykładem tego może być przebieg uroczystości pogrzebowych po śmierci biskupa Godeharda (w roku 1038).
