The geographical location of their shtetl made the wartime fate of the Ostrów Mazowiecka’s Jews different from that of their countryman from other towns in the region. Instead of creating a ghetto or planned murder of the Jewish community in Ostrów, the Germans expelled them in 1939 to the Soviet side of the nearby demarcation line. The Soviets, generally wary of all kinds of refugees from the west, qualified a large part of them for deportation and sent them to the northern regions of their empire. The curse of wandering fate became for them the final blessing of survival.;
O odmienności wojennych losów Żydów ostrowskich od doli ich braci z innych miast regionu zadecydowało geograficzne położenie ich sztetlu. Zamiast tworzenia getta czy planowego mordowania społeczności żydowskiej Ostrowi, Niemcy wypędzili ich jeszcze w 1939 r. na sowiecką stronę pobliskiej linii demarkacyjnej. Sowieci, z zasady nieufni wobec wszelkiego rodzaju uchodźców z zachodu, zakwalifikowali znaczną ich część do deportacji i zesłali w północne rejony swojego imperium. Przekleństwo tułaczego losu stało się dla nich ostatecznym błogosławieństwem ocalenia.
