  The article discusses the circumstances of the creation and the premises of the seventeenth-century theory that the Lithuanians are descended from the Herul people. The theory influenced early modern ideas about the origins of Lithuania and the Lithuanians. It gained little popularity because the Lithuanian nobility traditionally considered themselves descendants of the ancient Romans. Indeed, by the end of the eighteenth century, the theory had already been forgotten. It resurfaced in a modified form in the first half of the nineteenth century.;
  Artykuł omawia okoliczności powstania i założenia siedemnastowiecznej teorii pochodzenia Litwinów od ludu Herulów. Teoria ta wpłynęła na wczesnonowożytne wyobrażenia o początkach Litwy i Litwinów. Nie zyskała jednak wielkiej popularności, ponieważ szlachta litewska tradycyjnie uznawała się za potomków starożytnych Rzymian. W istocie pod koniec XVIII w. teoria była już zapomniana. W zmienionej postaci odrodziła się w pierwszej połowie XIX w.
