  This article attempts to provide an overview of the concept of nature in Novalis’ writings. Special emphasis is placed on the philosophical context of the development of this concept, especially the tradition of German transcendentalism (Kant, Fichte) and the critical attitude towards Fichte’s model of the self-determining ‘I’. Novalis replaced Fichte’s idea with a ‘dialogical’ concept, according to which every act of self-consciousness of the ‘I’ already presupposes the presence of the ‘not-I’. Novalis’s conception of nature also had a considerable influence on his understanding of the source and aims of artistic creation, with its distinctly utopian character. In this context, attention has also been drawn to the model of the artist, to which Novalis gives a unique cognitive status - the artist reads the ‘hieroglyphic’ writing of nature.;
  Niniejszy tekst stanowi próbę przybliżenia rozumienia natury w pismach Novalisa. W artykule położono szczególny nacisk na filozoficzny kontekst kształtowania się tej koncepcji, przede wszystkim na tradycję niemieckiego transcendentalizmu (Kant, Fichte) i krytyczny stosunek do modelu samostanowiącego się „Ja” Fichtego. Novalis zastąpił tę ideę Fichtego koncepcją „dialogiczną”, w ramach której każdorazowy akt samoświadomości „Ja” zakłada już obecność „nie-Ja”. Koncepcja natury Novalisa miała także niebagatelny wpływ na jego pojmowanie źródła i celów twórczości artystycznej, o wyraźnie utopijnym charakterze. W tym kontekście zwrócono także uwagę na model artysty, któremu Novalis nadaje wyjątkową rangę poznawczą – artysta odczytuje „hieroglificzne” pismo natury.
