  In 1920–1921, representatives of Soviet Russia signed peace treaties with five bordering states created on the ruins of the Romanov Empire: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, and Poland. The first was the peace made with Estonia, which wanted to formally end hostilities on its territory and stabilise its newly gained independence. On the other hand, the last one in 1920 was the Finnish-Soviet treaty signed, as was the peace with Estonia in Tartu. It was an attempt to normalise relations between Finland and Bolshevik-ruled Russia. What the Riga Treaty of 1921 was for Poland, for the countries on both sides of the Gulf of Finland, were the treaties signed a little earlier in Tartu. For this reason alone, it is worth recalling the circumstances under which they were concluded and their significance for Estonia, Finland, Soviet Russia, and the eastern part of the Baltic Sea region.;
  W latach 1920–1921 przedstawiciele Rosji Radzieckiej podpisali traktaty pokojowe z pięcioma graniczącymi z nią państwami, które powstały na gruzach dynastii Romanowów: Estonią, Łotwą, Litwą, Finlandią i Polską. Pierwszy był pokój z Estonią, pragnącą zakończyć działania wojenne na swoim terytorium i ustabilizować nowo zyskaną niepodległość. Ostatni natomiast – podpisany w 1920 r., także w Tartu, traktat fińsko-radziecki będący próbą normalizacji stosunków dwustronnych. Tym, czym dla Polski był traktat ryski, dla państw położonych po obu stronach Zatoki Fińskiej były układy podpisane nieco wcześniej w Tartu. Warto więc przypomnieć, w jakich okolicznościach doszło do ich zawarcia i jakie miały znaczenie dla sytuacji wschodniej części regionu bałtyckiego.
