  The Ossolineum collection of Early Printed Books includes many works describing the history and culture of Byzantium. We can find here the first printed descriptions of the capture of Constantinople in 1453, 15th-century depictions of the Byzantine capital, descriptions of precious illustrated Greek manuscripts, as well as Polish accounts of journeys to the East from the 17th/18th centuries. The aim and methods: Analysis of the content of the volumes discussed here allows us to show how, over the course of the 15th and 17th centuries, Constantinople transformed from the last bastion of Christian tradition and ancient culture into the exotic seat of a pagan tyrant. The “source of the Muses”, where humanists were looking for valuable manuscripts and a repository of holy relics, where numerous pilgrims headed, became a bazaar of oriental sundries full of secrets, unusual spices and foreign customs. Conclusions: These considerations show how, from the 16th century, the subject of works on the areas of Eastern Rome, passing into the sphere of scientific research as the history of the “Greek Empire”/Byzantium, was replaced in the popular and cultural dimension by a broader interest in the Orient. The topics discussed in selected Early Printed Books show how, in the eyes of modern Europeans, the Eastern Roman Empire inevitably lost those features of its former self with which the West could identify. Byzantium was becoming an increasingly foreign, complicated and fanciful world. The volumes presented here are also discussed in physical terms, presenting the profiles of their former owners and their libraries.;
  W kolekcji starych druków Ossolineum znajduje się wiele dzieł opisujących historię i kulturę Bizancjum. Możemy znaleźć tu pierwsze drukowane opisy zdobycia Konstantynopola w 1453 roku, XV-wieczne przedstawienia bizantyńskiej stolicy, opisy drogocennych ilustrowanych greckich manuskryptów, jak również polskie relacje z podróży na Wschód z przełomu XVII i XVIII wieku. Metoda i cel: Analiza treści omawianych tu woluminów pozwala ukazać, jak na przestrzeni XV–XVII stulecia Konstantynopol z ostatniego bastionu chrześcijańskiej tradycji i kultury antycznej stał się egzotyczną siedzibą pogańskiego tyrana. „Źródło muz”, gdzie humaniści poszukiwali cennych manuskryptów, i repozytorium świętych relikwii, dokąd zmierzali liczni pielgrzymi, stało się bazarem orientalnych rozmaitości, pełnym tajemnic, niezwykłych przypraw i obcych zwyczajów. Wnioski: Niniejsze rozważania prezentują, jak od XVI stulecia tematyka prac dotyczących obszarów wschodniego Rzymu, przechodząc do sfery badań naukowych jako historia „greckiego cesarstwa”/ Bizancjum, w wymiarze popkulturowym zastępowana była szerszym zainteresowaniem nad Orientem. Podejmowana w wybranych starych drukach tematyka uwidacznia, jak w oczach nowożytnych Europejczyków Cesarstwo Wschodniorzymskie nieuchronnie traciło te cechy swego dawnego oblicza, z którymi Zachód mógłby się identyfikować. Bizancjum stawało się coraz bardziej światem obcym, skomplikowanym i wydumanym. Prezentowane tutaj woluminy omówiono również pod względem fizycznym, przybliżając sylwetki ich dawnych właścicieli oraz ich bibliotek.
