• Description:
  The epitaph of Stanisław Chroberski in Sandomierz Cathedral, created around 1520 in the painterly environment of Kraków, is one of the most valuable monuments of panel painting from the turn of the Middle Ages and modern times. It has been the subject of numerous publications and mentions in the scientific literature over the years. The recent conservation of this work, carried out in 2015, provided an opportunity for detailed research and the preparation of a modern monograph on this monument. The founder of the epitaph, the then royal secretary Stanisław Tarło, who, as Bishop of Przemyśl, spent his last years in Krosno, died there in 1544 and was buried in the local parish church, is not without significance for the place of publication of this article. None of the authors to date, dealing with Chroberski’s epitaph, have taken the trouble to establish whether the present shape of the work should indeed be considered the original. Nor has anyone attempted to reconstruct the circumstances under which this work was commissioned, or to ask whether the stone slab with the text of the epitaph inscription, set into the pillar of the nave, can indeed be considered in the context of a simultaneous foundation together with the panel painting. The research of the author of this article shows that the elements – which make up the current artistic shape of the monument – did not originally form a single whole. The painting in the coping and in the predella are disassembled parts of an altarpiece, most probably of a triptych character, created in the workshop of an anonymous painter from Małopolska called the Master of Polyptych in Szyk. At an unspecified time, perhaps as late as the second half of the 19th century, they were secondarily combined with a panel painting, an outstanding work of Kraków painting from the early 1620s, originally forming the central part of the epitaph of Stanisław Chroberski. The result was a kind of imitation of a single-axis altar retable hung on one of the stone pillars of the Sandomierz Cathedral nave. In this form, the structure has survived to the present day and has been treated by all previous researchers – although quite wrongly – as an artistically homogeneous ensemble.;
  Epitafium Stanisława Chroberskiego w katedrze sandomierskiej, powstałe około 1520 roku w malarskim środowisku Krakowa, należy do najcenniejszych zabytków malarstwa tablicowego z przełomu średniowiecza i czasów nowożytnych. Od lat było przedmiotem licznych publikacji i wzmianek w literaturze naukowej. Ostatnia konserwacja tego dzieła, przeprowadzona w roku 2015, stała się okazją do przeprowadzenia szczegółowych badań oraz przygotowania nowoczesnej monografii tego zabytku. Nie bez znaczenia dla miejsca publikacji tego artykułu pozostaje fundator epitafium – ówczesny sekretarz królewski Stanisław Tarło, który jako biskup przemyski ostatnie lata spędził w Krośnie, tu umarł w roku 1544 i został pochowany w miejscowym kościele parafialnym. Żaden z dotychczasowych autorów zajmujących się epitafium Chroberskiego nie zadał sobie trudu by ustalić, czy obecny kształt dzieła istotnie uznać należy za pierwotny. Nikt nie podjął również próby zrekonstruowania okoliczności, w których dzieło to zostało zamówione, ani nie zadał pytania, czy kamienna płyta z tekstem inskrypcji epitafijnej, wmurowana w filar nawy, istotnie może być rozpatrywana w kontekście jednoczasowej fundacji wraz z obrazem tablicowym. Badania autora artykułu dowodzą, że elementy składające się na obecny kształt artystyczny zabytku nie stanowiły pierwotnie jednej całości. Obraz w zwieńczeniu i w predelli to zdekompletowane części nastawy ołtarzowej, najpewniej o charakterze tryptyku, powstałe w pracowni anonimowego malarza małopolskiego zwanego Mistrzem Poliptyku w Szyku. W bliżej nieokreślonym czasie, być może dopiero w 2. poł. XIX wieku, zostały one wtórnie połączone z obrazem tablicowym, wybitnym dziełem malarstwa krakowskiego z początku lat 20. XVI wieku, stanowiącym pierwotnie centralną częścią epitafium Stanisława Chroberskiego. W ten sposób powstał rodzaj imitacji jednoosiowego retabulum ołtarzowego zawieszonego na jednym z kamiennych filarów nawy katedry sandomierskiej. W takim kształcie struktura ta przetrwała do czasów nam współczesnych i przez wszystkich dotychczasowych badaczy – choć zupełnie niesłusznie – była traktowana jako zespół artystycznie jednorodny.
