  The proposed study is an attempt at a methodological analysis of Jerzy Pietrkiewicz’s book Trzeci Adam. Opowieść o mariawitach, which is a Polish adaptation of The Third Adam from 1975. The analysis of the émigré writer’s work goes beyond the framework of a traditional review, making the Polish edition the starting point for describing a broader problem. It can be formulated as a general question: is J. Pietrkiewicz’s work a scholarly monograph on Archbishop Jan M. Michael Kowalski and the Mariavites?The answer may raise other questions, namely those concerning the methodology adopted by the Author, the selection of sources and the criticism of the translation. The research procedure was derived from the hermeneutic method, supported by the historical-comparative method. The introduction to the subject constitutes the discussion of the Polish edition of the book. Attention is then given to the issues of the method adopted by the Author and its consequences. The issue of the recognition of this work as scholarly in academic and ecumenical circles is also addressed. The whole analysis concludes with a summary.;
  Proponowane studium jest próbą metodologicznej analizy książki Jerzego Pietrkiewicza Trzeci Adam. Opowieść o mariawitach, będącego polską adaptacją The Third Adam z 1975 r. Analiza dzieła emigracyjnego pisarza wykracza poza ramy tradycyjnej recenzji, czyniąc polskie wydanie punktem wyjścia do opisania szerszego problemu. Można go sformułować jako ogólne pytanie: Czy praca J. Pietrkiewicza jest monografią naukową abpa Jana M. Michała Kowalskiego i mariawitów? Odpowiedź na nie prowokujeinne, a mianowicie dotyczące przyjętej przez autora metodologii, doboru źródeł oraz krytyki przekładu. Procedura badawcza została wywiedziona z metody hermeneutycznej, wspomaganej przez metodę historyczno-porównawczą. Wprowadzenie w tematykę stanowiomówienie polskiej edycji książki. Następnie uwagę poświęcono kwestiom przyjętej przez autora metody i jej konsekwencji. Poruszono także kwestię uznania tej pracy jako naukowej w środowiskach akademickim i ekumenicznym. Całość zamyka podsumowanie.
