The paper presents selected problems that have appeared while lecturing about social insurance and pension systems at the faculty of Finance and Accountancy at the University of Economics. Bearing in mind teaching experience at faculty of Management, Computer Science and Fi- nance at the Wrocław University of Economics (studies of 1st and 2nd degree) a survey of subjects was made. The subjects covered the issue of pensions system and social insurance. Other factors considered were the number of hours lectured and how prioritised the subjects were. It was pointed out that mathematical and statistical methods should be more widely used whi- le teaching about pension systems and social insurance, especially with regards to the calculation of demographic risk and the calculation of insurance premium and benefits. The second part of the article deals with the practical aspects of applying the issue of pension economics in BA and MA thesis. It also covers the basic problems associated with such thesis, concentrating on how to define basic notions and how to do analysis using quantative methods.
