• Description:
  The main  aim of  the  article  is  to  present  differences  in  functioning  of  sequences przede wszystkim, nade wszystko and ponad wszystko. The first one is a particle, which operates at sentential meta-level. Applying it in the utterance, the speaker both singles out  the element  from a  set of elements  (similar  to one another  to  a certain extent but which are characterised by different intensity of the same feature), and simutaneously emphasises the importance of what has been said. The other two sequences, often treated as synonymous to przede wszystkim, are nominal phrases. On the basis of the syntactic analysis of collocations of prepositions nad and ponad with nouns in Accusativus, the author shows that nade wszystko and ponad wszystko are collocations of the mentioned prepositions and the noun wszystko. The meaning of the phrase ‘more than anything’ that is often ascribed to them can derive from the meaning of ponad, nad and wszystko.
