Okół, initially described by sources as a “new town” (nova civitas), in the first half of the fourteenth century, functioned within the Krakow settlement complex as an autonomous territory. It is generally accepted that Okół was established due to a decision of Prince Władysław the Short. However, its origin and legal status continue to be the subject of complex historical debates, significantly affecting the general understanding of the processes of colonisation under German law in Polish territories.;
Okół, określany początkowo przez źródła „nowym miastem” (nova civitas), stanowił autonomiczne terytorium, funkcjonujące w pierwszej połowie XIV w. w obrębie krakowskiego zespołu osadniczego. Powszechnie przyjmuje się, że powstał w wyniku decyzji Władysława Łokietka. Jego geneza i status prawnoustrojowy pozostają jednak przedmiotem zawiłych dyskusji historiograficznych, mających duże przełożenie na ogólną wiedzę o mechanizmach kolonizacji na prawie niemieckim na ziemiach polskich.
