  Graduating from school and university often has a significant impact on an individual’s subsequent life choices, material status, and social position. At the turn of the 20th century, education and the qualifications acquired through it provided a pathway to improving one’s life circumstances. Biographies provide insight not only into the life of an individual but also into the historical context, helping us to understand the trajectories of people’s lives. The aim of this article is to explore the biography of Jesuit Józef Sas, a scientist and teacher. His life story serves as a representative example of the lives of those like him and forms a basis for creating a collective biography of a professional group living during a particular historical period. The study employs biographical research and document analysis, including so-called ego-documents, to outline Sas’s character, life story, and professional journey. Key sources include documents housed in the Archives of the Society of Jesus in Krakow, as well as studies and pre-existing biographies from specialist dictionaries. A closer look at Józef Sas’s life and educational choices provides a deeper understanding of his personal history. His experiences, provide a window into the individual destinies of those who followed similar paths.;
  Ukończone szkoły, odbyte studia często mają wpływ na dalsze wybory życiowe. Niejednokrotnie wpływały one na status materialny oraz pozycję społeczną człowieka. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku edukacja oraz zdobyte w trakcie jej trwania kwalifikacje dawały szansę na poprawę sytuacji życiowej. Biografie osób pozwalają poznać nie tylko życie danej jednostki, ale także epokę, w której ona żyła, oraz zrozumieć losy ówczesnych ludzi. Celem artykułu jest poznanie biografii jezuity Józefa Sasa, który był naukowcem i nauczycielem. Dzieje jego życia mogą być przykładem życia jemu podobnych; mogą jednocześnie stanowić podstawę do stworzenia biografii zbiorowej, np. grupy zawodowej danego okresu historycznego. W kreśleniu postaci Sasa oraz jego drogi życiowej i zawodowej wykorzystane zostały badania biograficzne oraz metoda analizy dokumentów, m.in. tzw. egodokumentów. Podstawowym materiałem źródłowym były: dokumenty przechowywane w Archiwum Towarzystwa Jezusowego w Krakowie, opracowania oraz powstałe wcześniej biogramy ze specjalistycznych słowników. Przybliżenie drogi życiowej i wyborów edukacyjnych Józefa Sasa pozwala na zrozumienie jego osobistej historii. Poprzez pryzmat tej postaci możliwe jest także poznanie jednostkowych losów osób jemu podobnych.
