Genesis 18:1-15 is a first narrative of hospitality in the Bible. To some extent it follows a protocol of hospitality as it is practiced in the ancient Near East. However the biblical story departs from it in some important points. In order to understand them we must apply several hermeneutical insights made by E. Levinas, P. Ricoeur, and J. Derrida. They help to distinguish between conditional hospitality of Abraham concerned with rights, duties, obligations, and unconditional, absolute hospitality of strangers, without sovereignty, which unfolds towards what is impossible.;
Spotkanie Abrahama z nieznajomymi w Rdz 18,1-15 jest pierwszym epizodem w Biblii, którego głównym tematem jest gościnność. Przebiega ona z reguły według przyjętego na starożytnym Bliskim Wschodzie protokołu gościnności, który na gospodarza i gościa nakłada określone prawa i obowiązki. Jednak w Rdz 18,1-15 zauważalne są pewne odstępstwa. Ich głębsze zrozumienie staje się możliwe dzięki współczesnym hermeneutykom gościnności autorstwa E. Levinasa, P. Ricoeura i J. Derridy. Pozwoliły one wyróżnić w tym opowiadaniu dwa rodzaje gościnności. Gościnność Abrahama posiada cechy gościnności warunkowej, wynikającej z suwerenności gospodarza. Nieznajomi w obietnicach złożonych Sarze odsłaniają gościnność bezwarunkową, absolutną, wykraczającą poza wszelkie reguły udzielania gościny.
