  J.R.R. Tolkien w swojej powieści z rozmachem pokazuje walkę dobra ze złem. W takim zmaganiu niezwykle ważna jest nadzieja. Autor artykułu pragnie pokazać, że w swoim głębokim wymiarze Władca Pierścieni jest księgą nadziei. Tolkien prowadzi losy swoich bohaterów czasem nad krawędzią przepaści i rozpaczy, ale ostateczne zwycięstwo należy zawsze do dobra. Artykuł pokazuje heroizm postaci, ich męstwo, odwagę i wierność, co budzi nadzieję. Na kartach powieści obok wolności bohaterów i destrukcyjnych sił zła są także dyskretne „inne siły”, które można nazwać opatrznościowymi. Powieść Tolkiena ukazuje, że w historii jest prowadząca myśl i opieka kogoś wielkiego, kto dostrzega więcej i widzi dalej.
