  We współczesnej gospodarce można zaobserwować intensywne wielokierunkowe zmiany. Są one rezultatem wielu procesów, takich jak: rewolucja technologiczna oparta na technologiach informatycznych, kształtowanie się gospodarki globalnej, przekształcanie się paradygmatu rozwoju. Obecnie kreatywność i wchłonięta wiedza przesądzają o konkurencyjności przestrzennej jednostki. Nowoczesna gospodarka również zmienia procesy urbanizacji, ponieważ wpływa na jej kierunek.
