  Victor Hugo, a man of combat, repeatedly adopted the posture of the “one against all” in his political life as well as in his literary life. Contempt, coupled with irony and a fierce sense of polemic, then appears to be a weapon of choice to disqualify the opponent and simultaneously build up a moral stature. It is these mechanisms that we will attempt to identify through Victor Hugo’s public speeches, his literary work and his drawings. We will attempt to highlight the strategies at work in these struggles: the ad hominem attack and the physical attack; the processes of exhibition by which the poet subjects these targets to public opprobrium; the processes of reductio ad absurdum of the opponent’s reasoning, emptied of meaning and ridiculed.;
  Victor Hugo, homme de combat, a adopté à de nombreuses reprises la posture du « seul contre tous » dans sa vie politique comme dans sa vie littéraire. Le mépris, assorti de l’ironie et d’un sens féroce de la polémique, apparaît alors comme une arme de choix pour disqualifier l’adversaire et se construire simultanément une stature morale. Ce sont ces mécanismes que l’on tentera de cerner à travers les discours publics de Victor Hugo, son œuvre littéraire et ses dessins. On s’attachera à mettre en évidence les stratégies à l’œuvre dans ces combats : l’attaque ad hominem et l’atteinte physique ; les procédés de monstration et d’exhibition par lesquels le poète soumet ces cibles à l’opprobre public ; les procédés de reductio ad absurdum des raisonnements de l’adversaire, vidés de sens et ridiculisés.
