  Silesia as a Subject of Research into the Medieval Three Estates: Traditions and Prospects in German, Polish and Czech Historiography

  In the last twenty years or so, historians have been exploring the differences that made the three Medieval estates co-existing in Silesia at the turn of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era so different in their forms. While earlier, until the 80s of the 20th century, the main focus of historical studies had been on the history of institutions, the constitution, and the economic issues, later interests concentrated on the social and cultural issues. Generally speaking, the Silesian territory, due to its considerable territorial differentiation, the co-existence of unequally divided authorities and powers, the instability of state organs and the fragmentation of the structures whose aim was to guard and protect the state identity and the law and order in the state, has always been a rewarding object of study of historians. What is characteristic and interesting though, is the diversity of attitudes and views expressed by different historians – researchers into internal policies, and how they influenced their interpretation of contemporaneous external facts and policies. This interest in the surrounding world was common among the 19th and 20th centuries’ historians, and can be clearly detected in all the three historiographies in question, showing its influence on different interpretations and assessment of the same historical facts. The paper focuses on the issues arising from the history of the science of history. First, it looks at the studies that were carried out in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic and emphasises the specific contexts of the research that permitted critical conclusions to be drawn regarding traditions and institutional foundations of these states. Next, the history of estate structures on the example of the relations between Silesia and its neighbours in the area of state policy is analysed, and the possibilities resulting from approaching the subject in a manner extending beyond the regional level are investigated. Finally, those issues that are in the centre of interest of contemporary researchers are discussed. A catalogue of source materials and works reflecting the updated state of affairs has been attached.;
  Depuis une vingtaine d’années, les historiens qui étudient les formes extraordinairement variées qu’ont pu revêtir les états dans la Silésie de la fin du Moyen Age et du début des Temps Modernes, ne l’ont fait pas toujours fait dans les mêmes perspectives. Tandis que, jusqu’aux années quatre-vingt du XXe siècle, c’étaient les interrogations relatives à l’histoire de institutions, des constitutions et de l’économie qui dominaient, on observe depuis un intérêt de plus en plus marqué pour les points de vue sociaux ou culturels. En règle générale, l’espace de la Silésie, du fait de sa grande diversité territoriale, de la cohabitation de pouvoirs inégalement établis, avec des d’autorites instables et des structures d’identité et de loyauté morcelées, a toujours représenté un champ quasiment idéal pour l’histoire des états. La recherche a naturellement toujours été affectée, sciemment ou inconsciemment, par l’engagement parfois marqué des chercheurs en politique intérieure, engagement qui, souvent, autorisait également des interprétations en termes de politique extérieure. Cet intérêt pour les questions liées au contexte contemporain, qu’on peut observer tout au long des XIXe et XXe siècles dans les trois historiographies nationales, a inévitablement influencé aussi l’appréciation de l’objet de la recherche proprement dit. La présente communication répond avant tout à une préoccupation relevant de l’histoire de la science historique. Elle s’attache, dans un premier mouvement, à replacer les recherches poursuivies sur le sujet en Allemagne, en Pologne et en Tchéquie dans leur contexte particulier pour opérer un résumé critique de leurs traditions, de leur substrat institutionnel et de leurs résultats. Dans un deuxième temps, on démontrera à l’exemple des relations entre la Silésie et ses voisins en matière de politique des états quelles possibilités peut offrir une approche du sujet qui dépasse le cadre régional pour s’intéresser à l’histoire des structures. Enfin, on examinera les questions qui occupent la recherche actuelle en formulant des propositions concrètes. La communication est complétée par un catalogue des sources et des ouvrages qui semblent représentatifs de l’état de la recherche.
