  Examination for the sworn translator vis-à-vis norm and quality of translating legal texts

  According to the Polish Act on the Sworn Translators’ Profession, since 2005 a state examination, obligatory to become the sworn translator, has been in force. Within the years 2006–2008 only a few candidates taking this examination were able to pass it (24%). The paper attempts at answering the key question about the reasons for this low number of candidates who passed this examination. The author analyses the examination requirements from the perspective of the candidates and proves that the main reasons for their failure are not only the absence of appropriate skills and the lack of knowledge. The State Examination Board, obliged to implement the examinations, has to accept a partial responsibility for it since it has not elaborated any examination specifi cation containing terminology requirements and assessment rules. The State Examination Board organises the examinations relying on what the appropriate regulation specifies. The author stresses that the legal and economic terminology is so large and complex that it is impossible to learn the entirety of it and prepare properly for the examination without knowing what is really required. The paper postulates therefore that the chair of the State Examination Board should initiate elaborating a detailed examination specification that will specify and interpret the aforementioned regulation and establish examination requirements, especially those concerning minimum terminology that would be necessary.;
  W artykule podjęto krytyczną refleksję nad egzaminem państwowym na tłumacza przysięgłego w Polsce. Autor wychodzi od wyjaśnienia pojęć „norma” i „jakość” w kontekście tłumaczeń, by przyjrzeć się w dalszej części, na ile pojęcia te mają odzwierciedlenie w praktyce egzaminacyjnej. Autor zauważa konieczność doprecyzowania wymagań egzaminacyjnych w zakresie terminologii specjalistycznej oraz opracowania szczegółowego regulaminu egzaminu. Brak szczegółowych wymagań w tym zakresie jest jego zdaniem jednym z powodów niskiej zdawalności egzaminu. W artykule po raz pierwszy podjęto próbę krytycznej analizy obecnej sytuacji z perspektywy kandydatów na tłumaczy przysięgłych.
