The objective of this paper is to investigate the issue of social perception of fear. The starting point is the conclusion that fear has been considered differently throughout the history. We focuses on classic approaches, majority of which considered fear negatively, assessing it from a moral point of view as the lack of virtue and fortitude. These classic approaches have an indelible impact on how the phenomenon of fear is perceived and which revolutionised the approach to fear, both in theory and in terms of social awareness.;
Głównym zadaniem niniejszego artykułu jest prześledzenie społecznego postrzegania zjawiska lęku. Punktem wyjścia jest konstatacja, że lęk był rozmaicie oceniany na przestrzeni dziejów. Uwaga poświęcona została klasycznym ujęciom problematyki lęku, które zjawisko lęku wartościują przeważnie negatywnie, oceniając lęk z moralnego punktu widzenia jako brak cnoty męstwa. Te klasyczne ujęcia wywarły niezatarty wpływ na postrzeganie zjawiska lęku i dokonały rewolucji w spojrzeniu na lęk, zarówno w teorii, jak i w świadomości społecznej.
