Główna część artykułu opiera się na doświadczeniach prac nad mapami szczegółowymi ziem polskich Korony w XVI w. Omówiono podstawę źródłową oraz treść tych map, zaznaczając stopień pewności lub prawdopodobieństwa przedstawionych elementów krajobrazu. Druga część obejmuje kilka innych przykładów z kartografii historycznej.
