  On the example of the Łódź agglomeration the authors examine the links between economic and educational institutions and the importance of qualifications ("human Capital") for development of the economy. The article describes the development of the academic centre in Łódź, the number of higher education institutions and students in relation to the structure of employment, the influence of the economic changes of the nineties on modernisation of the educational programmes, the institutional ties of higher education institutions with the economy, changes in the social structure and factors impeding the adaptation of higher education institutions to their social setting.;
  Autorki analizują powiązania między instytucjami gospodarczymi i edukacyjnymi oraz znaczenie kwalifikacji („kapitału ludzkiego”) dla rozwoju gospodarki na przykładzie aglomeracji Łodzi. W artykule przedstawiono rozwój ośrodka akademickiego w Łodzi, wzrost liczby uczelni i studentów w relacji do struktur/ zatrudnienia, wpływ zmian ekonomicznych lat dziewięćdziesiątych na modernizację programów nauczania, powiązania instytucjonalne uczelni z sektorem gospodarki, zmiany struktury społecznej oraz czynniki utrudniające procesy adaptacji uczelni do potrzeb otoczenia.
