  The article deals with the direct and indirect influence of pre-academic and academic criticism on the formation of public opinion in evaluating historical works and the demand for a particular image of the national past in the nineteenth century. The author argues in favour of the supposition that a vital role in transmitting information about historical works produced under the Partitions and in exile was played by the daily and periodical press. It was only with the professionalisation of historical research that criticism moved to specialised periodicals, thus narrowing the discussion on historiography’s shape to the specialists’ milieu.;
  Tematem artykułu jest bezpośredni i pośredni wpływ krytyki przednaukowej i naukowej na kształtowanie opinii publicznej w zakresie oceny prac historycznych i zapotrzebowania na określony obraz przeszłości narodowej w XIX stuleciu. W artykule przytoczono argumenty na rzecz tezy, że istotną rolę w przekazie informacji o pracach historycznych powstających pod zaborami i na emigracji odegrała prasa codzienna i periodyczna. Dopiero wraz z profesjonalizacją badań historycznych krytyka przeniosła się do wyspecjalizowanych pism, zawężając tym samym dyskusję nad kształtem historiografii do kręgu specjalistów.
