  This article presents the development of selected capitals of provinces between 1975 and 1998. The four described cities were given provincial status, even though, at the time of designation, they were smaller than other cities in the newly created administrative units. The article attempts to illustrate the range of development of cities selected as the voivodeship’s capital and to compare them with the neighbouring cities, which could be considered surprisingly omitted according to the demographic criteria.
