  The aim of the article is to reveal the refractions and manipulations applied to Joseph Conrad’s translations in the Polish periodicals in the Interwar period. The analysis is based on Descriptive Translation Studies whose main goal is to describe the translations, trace the changes that occurred in retranslations, identify the sociopolitical and historical factors that caused these changes and finally explain the functioning and reception of the translated text in the target culture. The refractions and manipulations are shown on the example of J. Brodzki’s translation of Conrad’s The Character of the Foe in “Literary News”.;
  Szkic ma na celu ukazanie refrakcji i manipulacji, jakim zostały poddane tłumaczenia Josepha Conrada w polskiej prasie w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego. Analizę tłumaczeń tekstów Conrada ukazujących się w polskich czasopismach literackich opieram na tzw. opisowych studiach nad przekładem, których głównym celem jest opis tłumaczeń, wskazywanie zmian, jakie zachodziły w przekładach tego samego utworu, identyfikacja czynników kulturowych (społecznych, politycznych czy historycznych), które wpływały na modyfikacje poszczególnych wersji i wreszcie objaśnianie funkcjonowania i recepcji przekładów w kulturze docelowej. Manipulacje tekstem Conrada pokazuję na przykładzie „Wiadomości Literackich” i utworu Dusza przeciwnika w tłumaczeniu Józefa Brodzkiego.
