The present document is an April 1946 report by the administrator of the Diocese of Gdańsk and is a valuable source pertaining to the history of religious relations in Gdańsk in the first year following the war. It includes essential statistical data, the relevant historical background, and political conditions. A significant portion is about the situation of the German populace and clergy, who had heretofore dominated in the small Diocese of Gdańsk. The report was authored by Rev. Andrzej Wronka, the apostolic administrator for the Dioceses of Gdańsk and Chełmno, who had been managing both dioceses from Pelplin (Diocese of Chełmno) and only moved to Gdańsk in July 1946. Perhaps it is due to the distance from the seat of the diocese that some information in the document is inaccurate. From the outset Wronka strove to polonise the Diocese of Gdańsk, but wanting to do so without neglecting Christian solidarity with the impoverished German populace, which included providing charity and keeping the priests of Gdańsk on their pre-war posts.;
Przedstawiony do edycji dokument – sprawozdanie zarządcy diecezji gdańskiej z kwietnia 1946 r. – stanowi cenne źródło do dziejów stosunków wyznaniowych panujących w Gdańsku w pierwszym roku od zakończeniu działań wojennych. Zawiera podstawowe dane statystyczne oraz odpowiednie tło historyczne i uwarunkowania polityczne. Dużo miejsca zajmuje w nim sytuacja ludności i duchowieństwa niemieckiego, które dotąd dominowało w niewielkiej diecezji gdańskiej. Autorem sprawozdania jest administrator apostolski diecezji gdańskiej i chełmińskiej ks. Andrzej Wronka, który od września 1945 r. zarządzał obiema diecezjami z Pelplina (diecezja chełmińska), a na stałe do Gdańska przeniósł się dopiero w lipcu 1946 r. Być może odległość od stolicy biskupstwa przyczyniła się do pewnych nieścisłości w przytoczonych w dokumencie informacji. Od początku ks. Wronka czynił starania, by diecezję gdańską możliwie szybko spolonizować, nie tracąc jednak z oczu chrześcijańskiej solidarności wobec ubogiej ludności niemieckiej, wyrażającej się m.in. w pomocy charytatywnej i zachowaniu na stanowiskach przedwojennych księży gdańskich.
