  The aim of the study presented in the article was to show how illustrators address the subject of sexuality, surrounded by a strong social taboo, in books for children and youth. The study deals with illustrations from 91 sex education books belonging to the spontaneous reading sector, published in Poland in the years 1945–2018 and devoted to this age group. It shows the main illustration trends in sex education books, and presents them from a chronological and problematic point of view. Illustrations of sexual intercourse were analysed in detail in the light of different approaches to cultural taboos, the following aspects being considered as significant: their presence or absence, the way the matter was presented, and the relationship between the visual and textual layer. The stress was also put on the connections between the illustration methods and the country of origin of the book, its ideological profile, and the age category of the target audience.;
  Celem przedstawionego w artykule badania było ustalenie, w jaki sposób ilustratorzy podejmują objętą silnym społecznym tabu tematykę seksualności w książkach dla dzieci i młodzieży. Przedmiot badań stanowią ilustracje z 91 poświęconych edukacji seksualnej publikacji należących do sektora lektur spontanicznych, które ukazały się w Polsce w latach 1945–2018 dla tej grupy wiekowej.Studium ukazuje główne tendencje w ilustrowaniu książek poświęconych edukacji seksualnej, ujmując je z chronologicznego i problemowego punktu widzenia. Szczegółowej analizie pod kątem różnych podejść do kulturowego tabu zostały poddane ilustracje współżycia płciowego, przy czym za znaczące zostały uznane następujące aspekty: ich obecność lub brak, sposób przedstawienia zagadnienia oraz związek między warstwą wizualną i tekstową. Istotne były także powiązania między sposobem ilustrowania a krajem pochodzeniem książki, ideologicznym profilem utworów i kategorią wiekową odbiorców, do których są one skierowane.
