  The article discusses the links and analogies between interpretations of the January Uprising and the American Civil War in the literature of Poland and the South of the United States. In both cases, already during the hostilities, cultures of defeat began to emerge, in which national character played an important role. Romantic culture proved to be the most crucial reference point for these cultures. Exceptions to this were the commander-in-chief of the insurgent and Confederate armies. Both General Robert E. Lee and Romuald Traugutt represented the model of a classical hero with added Christian elements.;
  Artykuł omawia związki i analogie pomiędzy interpretacjami powstania styczniowego i wojny secesyjnej w piśmiennictwie polskim i Południa Stanów Zjednoczonych. W obu wypadkach już w czasie działań zbrojnych zaczęły się wytwarzać kultury klęski, w których istotną rolę odgrywała charakterologia narodowa. Najważniejszym punktem odniesienia tych kultur okazała się kultura romantyczna. Wyjątek stanowią głównodowodzący wojsk powstańczych i Konfederacji. Zarówno generał Robert E. Lee, jak i Romuald Traugutt reprezentowali model klasycznego bohatera uzupełniony o wątki chrześcijańskie.
