  The aim of the considerations was to attempt to recreate the pace of cultural influences – by determining at what stage of the exchange/acceptance of civilization components lasting changes in social consciousness occur, and – whether political attitudes can be an indicator of these changes. The situation of the indigenous peoples of southern Italy confronted with the Greek element of cities established during the Great Colonization was chosen as an example, and the path they took from open hostility to a lasting alliance with Greek neighbors. Due to the relatively rich source material, the subject of the analysis became the Messapii – a people inhabiting the Salento Peninsula and Greek settlers from the only Spartan colony – Tarentum. A parallel look at the southern Italian cultural and political reality in the 8th-4th centuries BC. leads to the conclusion that only after four centuries of neighbourhood, a specific oikumene was created – a southern Italian cultural community combining native and Greek components, and the culmination of local interactions was a sense of spiritual community expressed through political attitudes – the alliance of the Messapians with Taranto;
  Celem rozważań była próba odtworzenia tempa oddziaływań kulturowych – poprzez stwierdzenie, na jakim etapie wymiany/przejmowania komponentów cywilizacyjnych następują trwałe zmiany w świadomości społecznej, oraz – czy indykatorem tych zmian mogą być postawy polityczne. Jako przykład wybrana została sytuacja ludów tubylczych południowej Italii konfrontowanych z greckim żywiołem miast powstałych w czasach Wielkiej Kolonizacji oraz droga jaką przeszły od jawnej wrogości do trwałego sojuszu z greckimi sąsiadami, Ze względu na stosunkowo bogaty materiał źródłowy przedmiotem analizy stali się Messapiowie – lud zamieszkujący Półwysep Salentyński oraz greccy osadnicy z jedynej spartańskiej kolonii – Tarentu. Równoległe spojrzenie na południowoitalską rzeczywistość kulturową i polityczną w VIII-IV w. p.n.e. prowadzi do wniosku, że dopiero po czterech wiekach sąsiedztwa, powstała swoista oikumene – południowoitalska wspólnota kulturowa, łącząca komponenty tubylcze i greckie, a zwieńczeniem lokalnych interakcji stało się poczucie duchowej wspólnoty wyrażone przez postawy polityczne – sojusz Messapiów z Tarentem.
