  The article discusses the problem of social perception of the countryside, which seems to be marginalized in contemporary geographical research. The scientific interest in the spatial experience and perceptions is focused mainly on urban areas. Th is article consists of three main parts. In the fi rst place, the theoretical basis of the research on rural imagery, associated with „the cultural turn” in the social sciences and a multi-dimensional understanding of „rural” and „rurality”, have been introduced. Th en, the article presents two proposals for the analysis and classifi cation of freehand sketches, which can be used in studies of subjective image of the countryside. In its last part, the article discusses examples of sketches presenting selected villages and pays attention to a number of cognitive and practical goals, which they can meet in studies of relations between humans and their life space.
