W klasycznym, liberalnym dyskursie dominuje sformułowane przez Johna Locke’a postrzeganie własności jako nienaruszalnego, niezbywalnego uprawnienia naturalnego. To owa nienaruszalna własność swej osoby, wolności i mienia stanowić miała oręż w walce z monarszym despotyzmem. Dzięki niej liberałowie w XVII wieku mogli zaproponować nowy model państwa, w którym władza była ze swej natury ograniczona i nie mogła ingerować w obszar niezależności jednostki. Owocem tego stanowiska stały się burzliwe wydarzenia Rewolucji Wspaniałej, która na Wyspach raz na zawsze położyła kres monarszym próbom sięgnięcia do absolutystycznych praktyk.
