Despite the long interest in Teutonic castles, researchers have so far focused mainly on the large strongholds of commanders, leaving smaller structures on the outskirts of mainstream research. Among these buildings, a group of tower-type castles stands out. The residential-type tower is represented by the seat of the prosecutor in Ełk (the 1490s). It was erected on a rectangular plan (a mere 16.5 × 12 m) with a basement and four floors above ground. The second group consists of larger buildings: residential towers (Festes Haus or Hohen Haus). The stronghold in Sątoczno was built between 1326 and 1343. Initially, it was meantto be the seat of a commander, but eventually a forester settled there. Its main element was a rectangular residential tower with dimensions of 26.3 × 16.1 m. There was a residential tower in Nowy Jasiniec, but it is doubtful that its lower stone part had been erected by Pomeranian dukes by 1309. The construction of this building should probably be dated to the last quarter of the 14th century. It was a three-floor building with a basement erected on an elongated rectangular plan. The construction of the bailiff ’s residential tower in Giżycko should also be dated to the last quarter of the 14th century. The castle in Bezławki has beenthoroughly researched and documented. This residential tower was built after 1377 on an even more elongated rectangular plan (25.6 × 11.8 m). It did not have a basement and had four to five floors. The residential tower in Puck (Putzig) from the turn of the 15th century was also erected on an elongated rectangle plan (22.5 × 10.5 m) with an avant-corps entrance. Turning a residential tower into a seat of power had a well-established semantic meaning. Due to its small size, it was well-suited for the seat of a lower-ranking official. Even so,in Malbork (Marienburg) a keep served as the seat of the great Teutonic masters who had had the castle built at the end of the 14th century. Other Teutonic castles had towers serving residential purposes, e.g. the Klesza Tower in Malbork, two tall four-sided towers of the castle in Sztum (Stuhm), and probably the quadrilateral tower of the castle in Działdowo (Soldau).;
Zamki państwa zakonnego w Prusach budzą zainteresowanie naukowców od dwustu lat, jednak koncentruje się ono przede wszystkim na siedzibach komturów – tzw. zamkach konwentualnych. Mniejsze zamki, w których przebywali urzędnicy krzyżaccy niższej rangi,  znajdowały się najczęściej na marginesie zainteresowań. Nie zwracano również dotąd szerzej uwagi na zagadnienie obecności wież mieszkalnych na zamkach krzyżackich. Wśród obiektów tych można wyróżnić grupę zamków urzędników niższej rangi z domami wieżowymi.
