  The problem presented in the article concerns the uniqueness of the upbringing process in terms of respecting the degree and scope of freedom of people who, like children, do not yet have sufficient abilities to make the right decisions and to bear their full consequenc-es. The elementary ways of understanding freedom (positive freedom, negative freedom and internal freedom) were analyzed in terms of their importance for understanding the freedom–security dilemma in upbringing. The arguments for the need to consider the dual role of freedom in the structure of the upbringing process were presented. First of all, freedom is an essential goal of upbringing, and secondly, it is a tool without which it would be impossible to achieve the higher goals of upbringing (intellectual and moral autonomy).;
  Problem przedstawiony w artykule dotyczy specyfiki procesu wychowania pod względem respektowania w nim stopnia i zakresu wolności osób, które – jak dzieci – nie mają jeszcze wystarczających kwalifikacji do podjęcia właściwych decyzji oraz do ponoszenia w pełni ich konsekwencji. Zanalizowano podstawowe sposoby rozumienia wolności (wolność pozytywna, wolność negatywna oraz wolność wewnętrzna) pod względem ich znaczenia dla rozumienia dylematu wolność–bezpieczeństwo w wychowaniu. Przedstawiono argumentację za potrzebą uwzględniania w strukturze procesu wychowania podwójnej roli wolności, będącej po pierwsze istotnym celem wychowania, ale też (po drugie) stanowiącej narzędzie, bez którego nie udałoby się osiąganie celów wyższych – autonomii intelektualnej i moralnej człowieka.
