  The aim of the present study was to investigate the degree of lexical difference between the two geographically different versions of the Late Middle English text Mandeville’s Travels (Northern – Egerton MS, and East Midland – Cotton Titus MS), and then, to examine if the choice of words is region-dependent (i.e. if the differences are not stylistic, idiosyncratic or semantic). In addition, the secondary aim of the study was to check if the methodology designed for this study can be replicated and applied in other studies from the area of Middle English word geography. The main motivation to undertake this research was the fact that the field of Middle English word geography has been described as an infrequently investigated area of historical linguistics (see Kaiser 1937; McIntosh 1973, 1978; Hudson 1983; Hoad 1994; Fisiak 2000; Black Stenroos 2002; Carillo-Linares & Garrido-Anes 2008). The results indicate that region is one of the variables which influences lexical choices of the Egerton and Cotton Titus scribes. It is most clearly visible in the case of the noun pairs sterne/sterre ‘star’, benisoun/blessinge ‘benison/blessing’, and the verb pair callen/clepen ‘to call/to clepe’, which can be categorised as regional words. In the case of methodology, it naturally has its limitations, which are related to the time-consuming and tedious procedure. In addition, despite the fact that Mandeville’s Travels was mentioned by Black Stenroos (2002) and Carillo-Linares & Garrido-Anes (2009) as a text suitable for word geography research, these suggestions were not confirmed by my analysis. The final conclusion is that studies such as this one, limited to the analysis of one text, may complement large-scale endeavours and provide a testing ground for new methodological solutions which may finally shed more light on lexical variation in Middle English dialects.;
  Celem niniejszej pracy było przeanalizowanie stopnia zróżnicowania leksykalnego pomiędzy dwiema wersjami późnośrednioangielskiego tekstu „Podróże Jana z Mandeville” (północną – manuskrypt Egerton, i środkowowschodnią – manuskrypt Cotton Titus). Ponadto drugorzędnym, lecz nie mniej ważnym celem pracy, było zweryfikowanie, czy metodologia zaprojektowana na potrzeby tego badania okaże się skuteczną i wartą powielenia w kolejnych badaniach nad średnioangielską leksyką. Motywacją do podjęcia tego tematu był fakt, że średnioangielska geografia leksykalna jest określana jako rzadko podejmowany temat w badaniach z dziedziny językoznawstwa historycznego (Kaiser 1937; McIntosh 1973, 1978; Hudson 1983; Hoad 1994; Fisiak 2000; Black Stenroos 2002; Carillo-Linares & Garrido-Anes 2008). Wyniki wskazują, że region jest jedną ze zmiennych wpływających na wybory leksykalne skrybów. Widoczne jest to najwyraźniej w przypadku par rzeczowników sterne/sterre ‘gwiazda’, benisoun/blessinge „błogosławieństwo” oraz pary czasowników callen/clepen ‘nazywać’, które można zaklasyfikować jako słowa regionalne. Jeśli chodzi o metodologię to ma ona oczywiście swoje ograniczenia, które są związane przede wszystkim z czasochłonną i żmudną procedurą. Ponadto, mimo że „Podróże Jana z Mandeville” były wymieniane przez Black Stenroos (2002) oraz Carillo-Linares i Garrido-Anesa (2009) jako tekst o dużym potencjale badawczym w obszarze średnioangielskiej geografii leksykalnej, sugestie te nie znalazły potwierdzenia w mojej analizie. Podsumowując, badania ograniczone do analizy jednego tekstu mogą stanowić uzupełnienie zakrojonych na szeroką skalę przedsięwzięć oraz swoisty poligon doświadczalny dla nowych rozwiązań metodologicznych, które być może pozwolą w końcu na lepsze poznanie dialektów średnioangielskich od strony leksykalnej.
