Niedawno liczne powieści używały przypisów końcowych oraz konkretnych odniesień do źródeł, jednak przedmiotem zainteresowania tego artykułu są przypisy u dołu strony, nie wymagające dodatkowego wysiłku czytelnika oraz nie opatrujące całości powieści sygnaturą. Przypisy w tych trzech wybranych powieściach funkcjonują jako tekst poboczny, uzupełniający fabułę, opisy i dialogi. Charakter i pozycja tych przypisów określony jest przez autora artykułu jako typowe 'głębinowce' (ang. bottom-dwellers), funkcjonujące w paralelnym uniwersum tekstowym.
