  The Care and Educational Activity of Ursula Ledóchowska and the Ursuline Sisters of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus in the Polish Territories between 1920 and 1939

  This article is an attempt to analyse the care and educational activities conducted in the interwar period by mother Ursula Ledóchowska and sisters from the newly established Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus. The activities undertaken by the founder and the nuns of the Congregation at that time contributed to the improvement in the quality of life of children and young people. The operating network of care institutions, community centres, dormitories, and kindergartens, as well as the catechetical activities and social assistance had a significant impact on the equality of education and development among those deprived of any educational opportunities such as orphans, children from poor families or those without proper care from their parents. In the context of care and education during the interwar period, it is important to emphasise the important role of the Ursulines in the reconstruction of care and educational infrastructure destroyed by warfare in  Poland. By establishing and running institutions for children and youth, the Ursulines actively participated in the broadly defined reconstruction of the country in economic, educational, moral and spiritual turmoil.;
  Artykuł stanowi próbę analizy działalności opiekuńczo-wychowawczej, jaką prowadziła w okresie międzywojennym matka Urszula Ledóchowska oraz siostry z nowo powstałego Zgromadzenia Sióstr Urszulanek SJK (inaczej urszulanek szarych). Działania, jakie wówczas podejmowała matka Założycielka i jej zakonnice, przyczyniły się do podniesienia jakości życia dzieci i młodzieży. Sieć zakładów opiekuńczych, świetlic, burs, akademików, przedszkoli oraz działalność katechetyczna czy ta z zakresu pomocy społecznej miały ogromny wpływ na wyrównywanie szans edukacyjnych pozbawionych wszelkich możliwości rozwoju dzieci sierocych, z rodzin ubogich czy tych bez należytej troski ze strony rodziców. Mówiąc o okresie międzywojnia w kontekście pracy opiekuńczo-wychowawczej, należy zaznaczyć, że rola, jaką odegrały w niej szare urszulanki, jest niebagatelna ze względu na aspekt odtwarzania zniszczonej działaniami wojennymi infrastruktury opiekuńczo-wychowawczej na terenach Rzeczypospolitej. Urszulanki, otwierając i prowadząc placówki dla dzieci i młodzieży, wpisywały się bardzo mocno w szeroko rozumiany nurt odbudowy kraju, pogrążonego w zapaści gospodarczo-ekonomicznej, edukacyjnej, a także moralno-duchowej.
