  One is never indifferent when it comes to the event of death. Cemeteries are such places where we can meditate upon the fragility of the human life in this world. Much information on life and death can be drawn from the tombstone epitaphs. The content of these inscriptions as found in selected Torun commentaries illustrate the changes in our mentality when it comes to the problem of passing away. The man becomes aware that he or she does not freely control his or her life which as a matter of fact does not belong to them. On one hand we rebel against the necessity of dying and even against God himself and on the other we command ourselves to the Lord. Whenever we die with Christ and in Christ, we can defeat death that as our enemy deprives us of our lives (Cf. Rm 14, 7–8). The human existence is in the hand of God. We do not just live for ourselves, as the service in favour of others is the fulfilment of the Divine commandment of love of one’s neighbour and testimony of our life dedicated to the Lord.
