  The paper consists of two parts: the general one, devoted to theoretical and cultural assumptions of the analysis of the notion of education and the detailed one, dealing with the teaching and learning process as a form of education and educational culture. The first part contains an introduction f fundamental notions on which the further analysis is based and a qualification of their epistemlogical context. The notions of: social practice, culture, participation in culture, subjective-rational function, functional structure and humanistic structure are presented here and the assumptions of wholism and methodological structuralism are characterized. The current tendency to use among others the notions of function, aim, culture, participation in culture in a didactic (pedagogical) research has been shown. This tendency is characterized by the adoption of cognitve perspective without surpassing the limits of every-day social experience as well as axiological-persuasive orientation. In the second part the present writer enumerates cultural types of social practices, situates the educational practice among them and distinguishes its particular form - the teaching and learning practice. The writer points out to the genetic i.e. practical character of the teaching and learning practice and its connections with the people's outlook on life, stating the lack of reconstruction of transformation of this practice, performed by means of functionalgenetic explanation in the hitherto conducted didactic research.
