Autor podejmuje próbę określenia skali dobrowolnego wstępowania Polaków do rosyjskiego korpusu oficerskiego na przestrzeni czterech okresów: w ostatnich latach Rzeczypospolitej, w dobie wojen napoleońskich, w latach 1815–1830, w czasie powstania i bezpośrednio po jego upadku.
